Wine of the Week: 2005 Chateau Petit Bocq St. Estephe

This vintage was released back in 2006 and given a rating of 89/91 score. A well deserving score for such a beautiful wine.

I didn’t stumble upon this fine bottle of wine until this past weekend and opened it today. One word to describe this wine – wow!

This elegant wine is from the Bordeaux regions of France with a mixture of 55 percent Merlot, 43 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2 percent Cabernet Franc and aged one year in French oak. This full bodied vintage has fresh blueberries and roasted espresso on the nose and dense sweet ripe plums, cherries, tannin on the palate with a much desired lasting finish. With such a delicious finish, it would be a shame to follow it with anything else other than another sip.

I normally would recommend a specific dish to accompany this wine, but with the limited availability, I highly recommend savoring this exquisite vintage by itself.

Price: $23-$35

Wine of the week: Pasos Vineyards, 2005 Reserve Dastarte Red Wine

From Pasos Vineyards of Lockeford, Calif. this delightful vintage won the 2008 San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers Association Propriety Blend, Gold Medal and the Bronze Medal award for best Bordeaux blend at the 2009 Florida State Wine and Grape Juice Fair. While this little gem should have placed higher in Florida, its bronze medal recognition is still well deserved.

This bottle of heaven is loaded with smooth delicious flavors and aromas of fruit and a perfect balance of spice and smoky overtones. Released in 2008, this bottle of elegance is perfectly aged and fit to keep its exceptional flavor for the next 7-10 years.

Combined with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Verdot barreled in new French and new Hungarian oak barrels makes this Bordeaux blend a masterpiece. On the palate is rich with sweet black cherry and ripen plums with notes of pepper, leather, and smoke accompanies a much desired lasting finish.

This very drinkable vintage is well enough enjoyed alone for any occasion or with a nice peppery steak or game. Like all wines produced at Pasos Vineyards, this vintage is in limited production, so stock of this wine is in very short supply. Price per bottle: $49

For more information on this wine and other varietals, contact Pasos Vineyards at (877) 53-PASOS. Located at: 12470 Locke Rd, Suite 268, Lockeford, CA 95237

Pasos Vineyards, a Boutique Winery of Hidden Treasures

Located at the Vino Piazzo (winery plaza) in Lockeford, five miles east of Lodi and 100 miles east of San Francisco, Pasos Vineyards is one of the rare treasured boutique wineries among the 75,000 plus acres of wine grapes and one of the 55 plus wine tasting rooms in the Lodi appellations.

Pasos Vineyards is a boutique winery that produces only about 1,500 barrels of wine per year. Although much of Pasos grapes are contracted from local and Oregon state growers, including Lockeford, Lodi, Alta Mesa, and the Umpqua region, it is his formula of the finished product that exemplifies superior complexity and greatness.

Back in 2002, 12 flourishing boutique wineries produced and showcased wines at this historical 63-year-old establishment. Today, only seven wineries remain that are still producing wines. Although in a recent study by the Lodi District Grape Association suggested the wine industry remains strong with a value of $5 billion, there is still a struggle for the small time boutique wineries, and this is a sure product of the current economy. Winemakers, like Antonio Pasos of Pasos Vineyards are one of the few active boutique wineries that are still producing wines at Vino Piazza.
Pasos Vineyards has produced some of the finest wines with vintages like the 2009 Grand Harvest award winning, 2005 Reserve Dastarte(left), a signature Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec blend, the 2006 Tannat(right), an intense grape which is normally used for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Florida Grape Growers Gold medal, 2007 Albarino(center), an exquisite limited Spanish varietal. Other notable mentions are the 2006 Silver medal award at the California State Fair for their Sierra Foothills, Syrah, Silver medal Old Vine Zinfandel, and their Gold medal award winning, Lockeford Charbono.

Part of Antonio’s success isn’t just about producing and selling wine, but the service. This 15-year winemaking veterian always greets his customers with courteous smiles, along with eagerness from his experienced staff provides a proven success of this establishment. With that formula, weekly events with musical performances from talented musicians, and hosting special dinner pairing events provides a constant flow of customers. Most of Pasos visitors are regulars from neighboring cities, but many people are from across the country and around the world here to visit Pasos for the atmosphere and excellent wines.

Other exceptional vintages that are produced at Pasos Vineyards:
2007 Chardonnay/Albarino. This vintage is a blend of 50 percent Chardonnay and 50 percent Albarino. This vintage has the buttery flavor of a Chardonnay, but with an intense earthy tone of the Albarino. This wine has perfect balance with hints of ripe peach and other tropical fruits and a long citrus finish. A delightful alternative for non-Chardonnay drinkers.

2005 Charbono. Grown near the Mokeloumne River, this bold and deep burgundy colorful vintage is fitted with medium-firm tannins and exceptional acidity with a nose of currants and ripe plum. This wine is a great compliment with Italian dishes or rich hearty meats.

2007 Collaboration Celebration. As good as the 2005, this delightful vintage is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Tannat, Counoise, and Viognier. Deep with ripe fruit with tones of eucalyptus, black cherry, and ripen black cherry. The name says it all. This vintage truly is, “Heaven in a Bottle”.

2004 Reserve Pinot Noir. 100 percent grown from the appellations of Umpqua, Oregon, these grapes are of the essence of French Burgundy wine. Fermented in French oak for 36 months for added structure and loaded with Asian spices, this wine is every Pinot lovers dream. On the palate are dense flavors of deep cherry with earthy notes, smoke, vibrant raspberry, and cherry with a lasting finish. Unfortunately, this wine is no longer in production. Only about 10 unlabled cases remain.

One of the attractions of Pasos Vineyards is their resident artist and writer, David Jon Foster. Not only is he a prominent and talented artist, he is responsible for the beautiful artwork labeling displayed on each and every bottle produced by Pasos Vineyards. The entire tasting room is a virtual art gallery of Foster’s work.

While there is not an active website to inquire about this winery or purchase wines online, I implore you to take a trip to the Lodi appellations and pay a visit to Pasos Vineyards wine tasting room.

Pasos Vineyards is located in Vino Piazzo at 12470 Locke Road in Lockeford, just 7 miles east of Lodi, Calif. near Highway 88 and Highway 12. To check for upcoming events, call (877) 53-PASOS or (209) 727-3153

Wine of the Week: 2006 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon of Red Hills Lake County

2006 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Hills Lake County

This bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen for its immediate appeal. While I was on a tasting tour of assorted reds, this wine was on my second pour. I raised my hand and gestured to the bar tender to, “Stop right there. I’d like a full glass and a bottle to take home.”

This is an exceptional wine. Immediately from the pour, I knew it was going to be great from the sight of deep reds and plum color. I picked up the glass and I took a deep breath through my nose and took in the richness of plum, blackberries, and cinnamon aromas.

On the palate, it is even more exquisitely refreshing with tastes of ripened black cherry, juicy ripe plums, currants, and bold tannins that electrify the taste buds. While this wine is rich in fruit flavor, there are also tastes of earth which is rich from the very-much-alive, volcanic soil from the high appellations of Red Hills in Lake County. These mineral traits come through with hints of French oak and spicy white pepper.

While this wine may be enjoyed with an assortment of dishes, I implore you to enjoy it à la carte. This Cabernet deserves the utmost and complete attention by itself.

Pricing
When this vintage was introduced, it received an 89 point rating and retail price was introduced at around $45 per bottle. Due to the hardship of the current economy, the price has been reduced to around $25 per bottle.

Packing House Wine Merchants Wine Shop, Bar, and Lounge in Claremont

Located in Claremont, CA at the Packing House where it is surrounded by restaurants and shops is Wine Merchants Wine Shop, Bar & Lounge. Earning the “Business of the Year” award for 2008, Wine Merchants opened in April of 2007 by Sal Medina, a former high school teacher at Monrovia High School formally greets and services each customer with a smile. This lovely establishment is every wine connoisseurs dream, stocked with every wine imaginable from all over the world. There is even a selection of wines from Claremont winemakers.

Don’t feel intimidated if you come in and feel you are out of touch with the wide selection of wines. Sal is down to earth and an open book to questions about wine. No question to him is a stupid question.

Care for an appetizer? Wine Merchants has a menu of special pairing dishes especially created for wine tasting. So, enjoy a single glass or tour several different wines with a tasty pairing treat.

At the bar, a chalk board with a list of weekly wines is selected by Sal himself to taste or purchase by the glass. Since there are so many good wines at Wine Merchants, the chalk board helps to narrow down the amount of choices within the overwhelming selection of wines from the store.

Have no idea how to taste or pair wine? Yes, wine can be complicated, even for an experienced wine drinker. Wine Merchants offers wine classes every other Monday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a reputable wine expert.

Wine Merchants also holds a wine tasting event usually every Friday and Saturday with a special selection of wines each week with weekly live music. Sit at the bar or on the custom couch in the lounge. There is plenty of room to bring a group of guests or enjoy alone and converse with others.

Wine Picks for Fathers Day

Father’s day is just around the corner and you might be puzzled what to get him. Sometimes, the answer is right in front of your eyes. Maybe he’s a wine drinker and you’ve taken it for granted. It's possible it never crossed your mind to buy him a nice bottle or bottles of wine.

Picking out a wine for someone else can be a hassle or even a difficult task, because there are so many bad wines and it’s easy to choose the wrong vintage. Keep in mind that most men love a bold, hearty wine. Most Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandels are an easy picks, because these are common wines and they go well with red meats and pastas with zesty sauces.

To make the selection process easier for you, here are a few recommendations for the avid or even the inexperienced wine drinker.

2006 Hahn Estates Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet is both robust and hearty with ripe plum, blackberry, and French oak with hints of vanilla and licorice, makes this the perfect wine for nearly any grilled delicacy.
Price: $9 to $16

2007 Ravenswood Vintner’s Blend California Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a common wine that can be found in near any grocery chain. I chose this vintage for its simple but elegant flavors and aromas. On the palate it has a complex smoothness of black cherry and pepper, with a touch of leather and smoke. It has a lovely floral nose. If you can get your hands on a 2005 or 2006 vintage, by all means, snatch that up at once. Get one for yourself too. Price: $8 to $13

2007 Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel
This vintage is one of the finest zinfandels under $20. Not only does this wine have delightful flavors of wild berries and vanilla oak, but lasts long after the first sip. Upon every sip, you crave more. Price: $12 to $19

2005 Bianchi Heritage Selection Zen Ranch Zinfandel
This vintage is the lap of luxury for wines. It’s heaven in a bottle. If you’ve never tasted a wine that felt alive, you haven’t lived until you’ve tried this vintage. This is a bold wine with cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and mocha chocolate with a note of spice and pepper.
Price: $12 to $26

If you want to get your father more than a bottle of wine, go to a local wine bar and get him a wine club membership. The typical price for a wine club membership will vary, but normally around $50.

Wine of the Week: 2007 Cline Zinfandel

This weeks wine of the week goes to the 2007 Cline Zinfandel for its rich fruity, but yet bold deliverance of delicious aroma and succulent flavors.

Cline cellars tasting notes describes this vintage as “For I am thy blood, and thy nectar,” as if to be speaking from the bottle itself. And to add, not only speaking, but speaking in the third person.

While this statement may seem arrogant, the wine is absolutely correct. This could very well be the lifeblood of all wines and the nectar of all nectars.

Grown and harvested from the San Joaquin valley of Lodi and the appellations of Oakley, these two varietals of Zinfandel grapes are blended together to create the perfect balance of taste. This vintage does not disappoint with its black cherry and raspberry with a hint of vanilla, white pepper, and earthy tones. Together makes for long enjoyable finish.

For more information about the winemaker and this vintage, go to: Cline Cellars

Come meet Charlie Cline in person at Azo Vino. See my article on events for this week: Wine events in the Inland Empire area for the Week of June 2 thru June 7

Price per bottle: $9 to $19
